Iwate Prefecture is located along the coast of the Tohoku region and is one of the largest prefectures in Japan. In the southern part of the prefecture lies Hiraizumi, which flourished as a political center of Tohoku during the 11th and 12th centuries. Many historical buildings, such as Chuson-ji Temple and the nearby Motsu-ji Temple, still remain today. In the northeastern city of Tono, known as the birthplace of many traditional folktales, visitors can enjoy storytelling in an old-fashioned atmosphere at the Tono Monogatari no Yakata (formerly Tono Mukashibanashi Mura).
