For Customers With an International Driver's License
One of the following licenses is required to drive in Japan.
Japanese Driver's License (For residents of Japan)
International Driving Permit ※1 + Passport
※1Permits issued by member states of the Geneva Convention in accordance with the convention.
Driving with an International Driving Permit issued in accordance with the Paris Convention (1926), Washington Convention (1943) or Vienna Convention (1968) is not permitted in Japan.
Foreign Driver’s License※2 + Japanese Translation※3 + Passport
※2 This applies to driver's licenses issued from the following:
Swiss Confederation, Federal Republic of Germany, French Republic, Kingdom of Belgium, Principality of Monaco and Taiwan.
※3 Japanese translations are valid only for translations issued by the embassy or consulate in Japan of each country or by JAF (Japan Automobile Federation). For Taiwan, translations must be issued by JAF or the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association.
Issuance of Japanese Translation of Foreign Driver's License
One year from the day you entered Japan, ※4 or one year from the date of issuance of the international driver's permit. Whichever period is shorter shall apply.
PassportDate of Entry Stamp
※4 Verified by the date of entry to Japan stamped in your passport. However, if you enter though an automated gate (eGate), your passport will not be stamped. To receive a stamp, please ask an official when passing through the gate.
A car rental cannot be rented without an entry stamp.

1 Is the issuing country a member of the Geneva Convention?
2 Does the convention name read “CONVENTION ON ROAD TRAFFIC OF 19 SEPTEMBER1949?”
3 Is it within one year from the date of issuance?
4 Is there a stamp on the categories of vehicles permitted to drive?
5 Could you confirm the person in the picture is you?
